Hands-on With Android N's Multi-Window Mode : It's More than Multitasking

Google added one of the biggest feature in Android N is the Multi-window/Multitasking feature. You can run more than one app on the screen at the same time with this feature. Research saying that "There's More to multitasking in Android N than Split-screen mode".


Samsung and LG have released the same feature before and year. However, Android N has OS level support in for this feature. It means less custom code for all these features.


It's not just Split-screen look like Samsung and LG, Multi-window mode is more than that. Google added 3 ways to use multi-window feature. Which means you can run more than one app at once in 3 different ways.

Split-Screen Mode : It's natural multi-window mode, which worked as same as in Samsung and LG devices . You will get Split view of two different apps in this mode. You can active or use Split-Screen Mode by Long-Press the recent apps button(Only For Android N).

You can adjust the space of the windows from up top. You can go back to full screen mode by swiping downwards the divider line on the screen. To choose a secondary app you have to press home button.

Freeform Mode : FreeForm mode is a Windowed app mode just like PC(Windows,MAC and ChromeBook). You can re-size window just like we can do in PC with a mouse pointer.

According to Google's Docs "manufacturers of larger devices can choose to enable free-form mode" SO this feature will be not enabled by default.

Picture-In-Picture Mode : Google has also implemented PiP(Picture in Picture mode) in Android N. This feature will let one app exist as a floating window on the top of all apps and anything else. You can take Floating Video Player as example. You can keep viewing video in top of everything using this feature.

This feature has mentioned for Nexus Player TV box in Google I/O 2016. But, Google's engineer Mr.Ogunwale said that a manufacturer can't port it to any other types of devices.
